Purchase the site of the Wounded Knee Massacre to preserve it as a National Monument

Wounded Knee was the location of the final "battle" in the genocidal war against Native Americans by the United States military. The massacre of 150-300 peaceful men, women and children of the Oglala Sioux that occurred in the winter of 1890 is seared on our national conscience. In a NY Times editorial on 4/13/13, Chief Joseph Brings Plenty wrote that, "The private owner of the Wounded Knee site, who has held title to the 40-acre plot since 1968, wants to sell it for $3.9 million. If the Oglala of Pine Ridge don’t buy it by May 1, it will be sold at auction." This is a historic and sacred site for the Lakota, all First Nations people, and for all Americans. It must be bought by the US government and preserved as a National Monument, lest we ever forget what we have done and what we owe.
