It is of significant importance that the United States' mainstream news media [MNM] endeavor to serve the public with symmetry conducive to the social, economic and cultural values at stake. In order for such a regularity to work MNM must be held to a high standard enforced by the entity[s] that holds its licenses.
MNM should be charged to engage in the following:
Provide reliable news and programming that adequately expands across cultural lines.
Afford its viewers some understanding as to how and who selects its news stories. Perhaps such an understanding will help regulators mitigate some levels of bias news & media content.
And finally to settle via U.S. Congress & citizens' testimony if MNM's news gathering tactics has violated any citizen's [1st] [4th] or [14th] Amendment rights.
