Since Capital Punishment was reinstated, 138 persons who have been sentenced to death have been exonerated. Whether by newly developed technology or newly discovered evidence that vindicates a post-conviction claim of innocence, it is fundamentally wrong for our country to sacrifice accuracy for finality. Despite Constitutional guarantees of due process & equal protection, statistical evidence of conviction rates demonstrates that findings of guilt & subsequent sentences of incarceration & death are not equally applied to minorities as compared to those who are white. We petition the Obama administration to direct the Justice Dept. to join defendants' appeals of death penalty convictions before U.S. courts & to work to abolish Capital Punishment, that once carried out is uncorrectable.
