Senator Elizabeth Warren recently introduced the Medical Innovation Act. This bill would ensure that the NIH budget sees increases each year and offers a way to pay for it. In recent weeks, former GOP leaders Eric Cantor and Newt Gingrich have called for drastic increases in NIH's funding in order to cure devastating diseases. This needs to happen. NIH has seen funding stagnate and currently only about 10% of grants get funded. This isn't because of lack of good ideas -- it's entirely a function of how much funding is available. Meanwhile, the US sees its healthcare costs increase, countless diseases go untreated and thousands of brilliant PhD scientists decide not to stay in science purely because of lack of funds. This is an atrocity we need to fix. Fund the NIH and let's find the cures!
