We seek: a drastic reduction in copyright term length, return to an opt-in system, and a loosening of rights to better fit modern technology and culture.
Copyrights, which were originally intended to be limited monopolies, now keep works from public use for up to two full lifetimes. The public domain is dying, the phenomenon of remixing and sampling works is needlessly constrained, and innovative technologies are being sued out of existence.
These copyright changes have been lobbied for by corporations seeking to protect their existing assets and stifle competition, and do nothing to encourage new works. Please take our culture back from the corporations for the good of the public.
