In order for the United States to regain its technological edge, as a nation, we should be building publicly-owned broadband infrastructure. This would negate the need for Internet Service Providers to juggle cost justification of providing service. Instead, ISPs would be allowed equal opportunity to provde access to customers through a community owned fiber-to-the-home (last-mile) infrastructure.
This would help reduce the monopoly effect that some ISPs (Comcast in particular) have in some areas, especially when it comes to standard and speed of service. As we grow into the 21st century, the need for more bandwidth will only grow, so it makes sense to invest in municipal broadband networks now.
