Many people have lost faith in the fairness and validity of our electoral system. We can hold cryptographically-secure elections where anyone can verify that their vote was correctly counted while still having a secret ballot.
Scantegrity II (http://static.usenix.org/event/evt08/tech/full_papers/chaum/chaum.pdf) presents an end-to-end-verifiable voting scheme which is cheap, easy-to-use (the average voter only needs to mark the bubble for their choice of candidate just like in a normal election), and has been successfully tested (Takoma Park, MD municipal elections 2009). Why can't we use this voting system on a national scale?
