push for the Moynihan plan for a huge increase in taxes on ammunition -- because "Guns don't kill people; bullets do."

A high tax on the kinds of ammunition used to kill people will keep excessive ammunition off the streets. It would decrease the amount of gun violence almost overnight. Banning assault weapons is certainly desirable, too, but a very high tax on destructive ammunition would have a much more immediate impact. Senator Moynihan in 1993 pointed out that the U.S. had a 200-year supply of guns and a 4-year supply of ammunition. He particularly wanted to make especially destructive bullets unaffordable. His proposal is so common-sense that of course the NRA was against it. In the light of recent killings, it is time to reconsider the Moynihan proposal and hopefully to implement it in order to increase the safety of our children and everyone else. Let's do everything we can to reduce the killings!
