Christopher Columbus never found America. His voyages took him to Central America, Venezuela, and the Caribbean, but he never "founded" America. Even he thought he found India or China- but not America.
Furthermore, he and his men systematically killed, raped, and tortured natives. They even kidnapped native children and sold them into the sex trade.
And yet, on October 10, every single year, we honor this despicable man with a federal holiday. How is this indicative of the values we hold as Americans? We are a nation founded on immigrants, that values freedom and justice. Honoring a man who committed mass genocide is not an American ideal.
There are countless other American explorers worth honoring: Amelia Earhart, Nellie Bly, the Wright Brothers, or Bartolome de le Casas. Not Columbus.
