Put forth a statement &/or bill that clearly declares that having a mental illness is neither a crime nor criminal.

Created by V.M. on January 21, 2013

Those who are branded with a mental illness, suffer stigma and discrimination, and even lose certain rights as citizens (including the right to bear arms). Once people know about the brand, they treat everything you say as worthless or as being of less value. You can even be incarcerated against your will, indefinitely, without having committed a crime. Now there is a push to create a public list of the mentally ill, a searchable database, and this will cause an escalation in discrimination and a greater loss of rights. Whether caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, genetics, or trauma and abuse, having a mental illness should not be criminalized because of a handful of psychopaths and sociopaths (these are personality disorders and not technically the same as mental illnesses).
