We're running out of resources and area here on earth, and it's only a matter of time before this situation gets out of control. For a long time we've been spending far more on issues that are trivial in the long run, such as war. It would be a much better investment to research how we can harness resources from outer space and possibly set up a colony (as a means of dealing with overpopulation).
While I'm no rocket scientist, I know for a fact that we're not going to survive as a species of we just sit on our asses and fight with each other. There is no need for the U.S. to have as big of a military spending as it does, and every reason to see what resources outer space has to offer.
