The People should be directly involved in the pay of their elected leaders. The People are essentially the boss, as in We elected YOU -whomever that may be- to solve socioeconomic problems and protect our rights without any other special interests. By being an elected Official (President, Vice President, Congress, Statesmen, Senators, Governors etc.), the voting electorate is for all intensive purposes, by our Constitution, the only reason the elected Official has a job. As such, they should solve the problems presented, or not get paid because they did not provide the service they were hired to do. As a rule, this could lead to an even greater reformation where we can institute greater efficiency in our Govt. Get paid when you do the job, plain and simple.
