Due to sequestration, the federal government has mandated that all DoD civilian employees will be furloughed (forced to take an unpaid, administrative leave) for 11 days. This means that each civilian DoD employee will miss out on 11 days of pay from 8 Jul 2013 - 30 Sep 2013, which equals a 20% pay cut for the last three months of the fiscal year, or a bit more than a full pay check, & works out to be $2,647 per employee on average.
These furloughs will save the DoD $1.8 billion. However, $1.8B out of the total DoD budget of $613.9B is only 0.29%.
The President, Congress, & DoD leadership should find a way to cut 0.29% of the overall DoD budget without causing significant harm to over 680,000 DoD civilians, their families, and the overall economy. Prove that you value federal workers.
