Before WW2 started, the WHOLE WORLD had gone through or was going through an economic downturn that, today, is known as the Great Depression. Yet, despite that, when Fascism reared its ugly head, BOTH the US as well as its Allies still resolutely stepped forward to uphold and defend, western democracy, capitalism and human rights.
Today, on the other hand, it seems the US especially is willing to sacrifice human rights, democracy and our western/capitalistic lifestyle in favour of brownnosing the same Communists who murdered their own pro-democracy compatriots in '89, and threaten to to do the same in Hong Kong and Taiwan, the latter of which has been an autonomous democratic republic for at least a century. What good are economic opportunities without people to enjoy them?
