During his state of the Union Address on January 29th, 2014, President Obama called on members of Congress to follow in the footsteps of several local and state governments to raise the minimum wage to at least $10.10 per hour.
If POTUS believes in rewarding work with fair pay, then he should encourage Congress to increase funding for the Corporation for National and Community Service that would go directly to Americorps living allowances.
The living allowance should be required to be at least $10.10/hour or $17,170 for someone in a 1700 hour program. Currently, some members make less than $13,000/year.
Americorps members do real work that should be compensated accordingly, and they shouldn’t be left behind in the fair pay movement.
