Supplemental Security Income has not kept up with the constant rise cost of living for basic needs (food, energy, housing, clothing, and transportation) and inflation for the past 20 years. It needs to be raised from $735 to $1470, asset limits need to be relaxed to allow $4000 plus a car and home, and allow earned wages of 1470 dollars in a manner that if earned income exceeds it, the person can earn SSI for half the rate for six months to encourage saving.
Increasing the SSI amount and their limits for people who receive it will benefit everyone and be the first step towards getting the disabled out of poverty and improves the economy, if not a stepping stone towards Universal Basic Income for all Americans.
