While rises in goods have gone up the federal minimum wage has stayed the same for the past 5 years.
This inflation has caused the purchasing power of the minimum wage to decrease substantially over time.
In 1968 the federal minimum wage reached its peak value in real terms, $1.60. Today that would be worth $10.96 if adjusted for inflation.
With the federal minimum wage being $7,25 that means that someone working 40 hours a week all year long would make roughly $15,000/year which is $9,000 below the poverty line for a family of four...
