The current benefit for Disability SSI is so far beneath the poverty level, it denies recipients the dignity of self reliance and forces many into homelessness. The intent of the benefit was to ensure the disabled person had the ability to live, as in pay rent, buy groceries, keep utilities on and survive without being forced to rely on soup kitchens, food pantries, etc. It was intended to be above the poverty level and it's far below. Soon many veterans will begin receiving disability and will find themselves homeless at the current level. But all disabled deserve to be respected and able to live dignified lives on their own. A benefit that doesn't cover a marginal lifestyle is hardly a benefit to an individual and a community where they live. Being disabled should be respectable too.
