The US federal government began levying taxes on ammunition in 1919 and continues to do so to this day. The current tax rate is 11% however that rate is far too low. We ask the President to ask congress to introduce legislation to raise that rate to $100 per round of ammunition.
One of the principal arguments in the gun control debate is that the laws on the books are not enforced throughly. This tax would provide revenue to the ATF and other agencies that they desperately need.
Furthermore, this tax would provide a disincentive for the gratuitous acquisition of excess ammunition. Ten rounds would cost $1000 which is sufficient to protect your life. $100 to kill a deer is not unreasonable.
Reducing the number of bullets in circulation will decrease gun violence.
