The minimum wage has not kept up with inflation or with our economy. The current minimum wage of 7.25 per hour is only 30% of the purchasing power we had in 1968. This is creating an entire sub-class of people who work full-time but can't afford to live on their wages. Someone working full-time deserves the dignity of at least making enough to subsist.
Most of the working poor who work at these low wages can still qualify for food stamps, despite being employed! In addition, low wages create a situation where many people receiving unemployment benefits can't afford to take a minimum wage job. Most of these jobs do not provide health insurance (something which may be remedied by Obamacare). This makes these workers a burden on society, something that most of them would rather avoid.
