For too long, this country has settled for a meager minimum wage. Currently set at $7.25 per hour, this rate is too little for most people to live comfortably. Many people are forced to take on second and third jobs just to make rent every month. Many people who are unable to find second and third jobs are forced to live off government assistance to pay for food and electricity. This is criminal in a country that, 100 years ago, advocated for a living wage for all workers.
By raising the minimum wage to $15/ hour, it would provide an income of roughly $31,000 per year, which is more than enough to lift people out of poverty in many parts of the country. This would reduce dependence on government assistance and provide more purchasing power, which in turn, would stimulate the economy.
