The current minimum wage of $7.25 is lower than it was in 1968, when adjusted for inflation. The minimum wage for waiters has not changed from $2.13 since 1991. Both of these should be increased. The minimum wage should be increased to $9.50 an hour and indexed to inflation. Plus the minimum wage of tip earners should be fixed to at least 50% of the minimum wage. Increasing the minimum wage is crucial for low income earners since more than 75% of minimum wage earners are over the age of 20. Studies have, also, shown that an increase in the minimum wage would increase consumer spending. Obama needs to follow through on his broken promise of raising the minimum wage.
