Raise minimum wage in Mississippi

Created by S.L. on March 14, 2012

Increasing minimum wage would help our lowest-paid workers as well as the entire economy. According to the Economic Policy Institute, every dollar increase in wages for a worker on the bottom rung of the pay scale creates more than $3,500 in new spending after one year. With the rate of inflation, low-income families are barely getting by working minimum wage jobs. An increase in minimum wage would help reduce poverty levels and increase standard of living. College students who decide to go back to school, and work hard to get better paying jobs in the future are barely getting by now making $7.25 an hour. Many non-traditional students are having to make the decision to drop out of school to get a second job or take out more loans to pay for things such as gas, food, and utilities.
