The United States has one of the lowest gasoline taxes per gallon among developed countries. Raising the national gasoline tax will ensure that American's only drive when completely necessary. Taking a bus, subway or bike to work or school are viable alternatives for millions who simply choose to drive out of convenience. The extra revenue from only a few cents increase in the national gasoline tax will help the U.S invest more in research for new and clean alternative fuels. American culture has a deep, unhealthy obsession with driving that needs to be changed if we want to be living on this planet 200 years from now. A small hike in the federal gasoline tax is a good start down the road of weaning off national gasoline dependence.
