Currently there is a cap on the amount of income that is subject to SS tax. That cap is 106,800 dollars. This means that most americans are paying SS tax on 100% of their income, but the top earners are not, and the more a person earns, the smaller the percentage of income they do pay SS tax on becomes. Does it sound right to anyone that a person earning 107k and a person earning 500k or a million or a billion, pays the exact same 6,621.60 into SS? Congress seems to be wrestling with how to make a great program better, yet no one ever talks about this method seriously. Before we raise the retirement age or make adjustments to the way benefits are calculated, we should ask the top earners to pay SS tax on a larger portion of their income.
