The federal gasoline tax has not been raised for 18 years. Increasing the tax would strengthen our economy and national security, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and promote public transportation and sales of fuel-efficient cars. Revenue from the tax can be invested in infrastructure, education, and help with health care. A dollar a gallon tax would raise $150 billion a year, and by lowering long-term demand, the pump price would rise much less than the tax, lowering oil producers’ profits but benefitting everyone else.
