It is a formidable weapon in the struggle for worldwide implementation of women’s human rights---applied in court cases, used to advocate for changes in national laws, highlight violations of women’s rights in international committees.
While nature of subordination and means to combat it varies across countries, regions, ideologies, we should not lose sight that women are subordinated because we are women. Therefore, the goal to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women remains universal.
187 out of 194 countries have ratified CEDAW, Iran, Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, Palau, Tonga and the United States are the only countries which have not ratified. The U.S. is the only democracy that has not ratified CEDAW, and that is disgraceful.
