The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, commonly referred to as the CRC, is a human rights treaty that went into effect September 2, 1990. Currently 193 countries have ratified the treaty: every country part of the United Nations except the United States, Somalia, and South Sudan. The treaty ensures children freedom from violence, abuse, dangerous labor, and exploitation; it calls for adequate nutrition, free public education, health care, equality, freedom of speech, and safety for those under 18.
Mr. President, it is a national disgrace that the United States has not ratified this treaty. With your help, we can ensure that the United States reasserts its position as the global leader in human rights.
