Those who sign this petition urge the Obama administration to officially join 192 countries in the fight against Global climate change by ratifying the 1997's Kyoto protocol.
If put into effect the U.S. as an "Annex 1 country" or a major contributer to pollution world wide would have to reduce it's greenhouse gas emissions by 5.2% on average for the period 2008-2012 until the treaty is renewed. Since the US has not ratified the treaty, the collective emissions reduction of "Kyoto" countries falls from 5.2% to 4.2% below base year. The U.S.A as a "World Leader" is one of the few countries in along with Afghanistan, Southern Sudan, Andorra, Vatican City and Taiwan that have blatantly refused to ratify the treaty and in doing so refuses to help and lead in the global fight against pollution
