The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1990) is a human rights treaty which deals with the needs and rights of children and requires that nations act in their best interests. The Convention acknowledges that every child has certain basic rights, an important fact that was frequently ignored by other countries. As of January 20, 2015, we are the only country that has not ratified this important human rights treaty, despite the fact that we played a major part in contributing to its creation. While running for president in 2008, Barack Obama claimed that it was embarrassing that the government never ratified the convention and pledged to make sure that it would be ratified. Please sign this petition to ensure that the government protects the children of this nation.
