The Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act was a law created during the Great Depression to protect American businesses and agriculture by raising taxes on imported goods. It was disastrous at the time because it slowed spending even more. However, now is the perfect time for that law to bring America back to economic prosperity. In 2009, 60% of goods sold in the U.S. were imported. To make matters worse, some American-made products are made using foreign components. If we tax and boycott imports, the issue of cheaper products from overseas will disappear. Modern trade is ruining both our economy and our national pride.
