The People's Republic of China has expressed its blatant disregard for the recent Hague ruling regarding its claims in the South China Sea. Without intervention, it will continue to practice hegemony against other Southeast Asian nations . Also, the PRC has cut off normal communications with Taiwan due to the fact that it doesn't approve of the democratically elected President of Taiwan. These actions indicate that the PRC is acting in opposition to not only international law, but also its own policy of maintaining the status quo regarding relations with Taiwan. Pursuant to the Taiwan Relations Act, H.R. 2479, the US has an obligation to intervene should the PRC invade Taiwan. We believe that re-establishing a naval presence on Taiwan would be an effective deterrent to such eventualities.
