A local high school has recently passed a controversial uniform code. This got me thinking on whether or not school uniforms are effective, necessary, and even legal.
The constitution grants protections for freedom of expression and freedom of clothing choice. Our great country allows its numerous and diverse people to wear whatever represents them as unique, whether it be religious or simply a choice of fashion. Furthermore, all children in the U.S.A. have a right to a free education. "Free" does not mean "hundreds of dollars for expensive uniforms that the school makes a profit from". What right do schools, or even other parents, have to decide what our kids should wear? Also, I have yet to find any scientific evidence that states that uniforms increase school morale and performance.
