The Controlled Substances Act and the punishments associated with the violation of this law are outdated. The criteria in place for each drug schedule has not been applied to the most current research available, because there have been so many restrictions on the research of these illicit drugs. The government should allow for scientists to research the illicit substances in order to uncover whether or not they may have beneficial effects. In turn, the laws surrounding these drugs should be based off of this research. Legalizing and controlling drugs that have proven medical use will reduce black markets and crime, while increasing the safety and regulation of these substances by the government.
