In this day and age energy and information are big commodities. however The United States had an amazingly safe and powerful form of nuclear energy available: Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactors(LFTR). These reactors were abandoned due to Bias opinions and propaganda and even pure laziness of the energy commission and nuclear community of the time, and were not capable of producing fissile materials for bombs which the USA wanted at the time. These reactors were also highly endorsed by Eugene Paul Wigner and Alvin Wienberg. Much information on this is gained from a video on youtube. It is quite long but highly informational.
