This petition proposes that the District of Columbia be renamed after Barack Obama after entry to statehood. We recognize that the District needs a new name when it becomes a state because it will no longer be a district. We believe that New Columbia is an unfit name given the history associated with Columbus. Therefore, we propose that when Washington, DC becomes a state, it be renamed after a contemporary historical figure who inspired hope and embraced change, current president Barack Obama.
