The Mars Direct Program was a proposal formulated by Dr. Robert Zubrin as a cost efficient method of sending a manned mission to Mars. A manned mission to Mars will reinvigorate the economy in the short and long terms. In the short term it will put more Americans back to work and will put America back into its place as the scientific, intellectual capital of the world. In the long term the new technologies which will arise as a result of the project will be used by Americans and be produced in America to restart America's manufacturing base. The technologies developed in the 60's for the Apollo missions are today used as everyday appliances. It will enlighten future generations, as more students will be influenced to choose science, engineering and medicine as a field of study.
