It has cost $1 trillion, has put millions of ill individuals into a flawed prison system, and destroyed lives. We ask for the Obama administration to reaccess and CHANGE the mandatory minimums on drug offenses. We ask for them to inquire why individuals who commit crimes of murder are released from prison before those who commit crimes of non violent, petty drug offenses and REFORM failed drug policies. We ask to end the criminalization, marginalization and stigmatization of people who are addicted to or use drugs, but do no harm to others AND begin to offer a wide, easily accessible range of options for treatment and care for drug dependence, including substitution and heroin-assisted treatments like those used successfully in Canada, in custodial settings as well as prisons.
