Reaction to Irregularities in the 2012 Mexican Presidential Election

As president, you graciously congratulated Enrique Pena-Nieto for winning the Mexican election and the Mexican people for “ their commitment to democratic values through a free, fair, and transparent election process." Unfortunately, since election night irregularities have come to light that are being investigated by the Mexican Electoral Tribunal. More than half of the ballot boxes are being recounted out of concern for found inconsistencies. Because of questions concerning the validity and status of the election, we would like to request that you issue a statement showing that you are waiting to “formally” recognize the new president of Mexico until after the Mexican Electoral Tribunal announces an official result. This will show a profound respect for all global democratic processes.
