Our current defense budget is more than every other active nation's combined, with a total of almost a trillion annually. According to this very website:

The defense budget this year will be almost ten times the education budget. It's disheartening to see schools using 20 year old books, charging for food and programs, or even outright closing. The education of our children is a priority that should be placed above all others. We're ranked 13th in the international education index, and falling. Pearson ranks the US as average/low (http://thelearningcurve.pearson.com/index/index-ranking)
