The Oath of Office for the President is set forth in Article II, Section 1 of the Constitution as follows:
"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
The words "So help me God" were first added at the end in 1881 By Chester A. Arthur when he took the Oath following the death of James Garfield and did not become a tradition until after the 1933 inauguration of Franklin D. Roosevelt.
These words, not included in the Constitution, create an endorsement of religion, and while perhaps regarded by the courts as legal ceremonial deism, make nonreligious Americans feel marginalized. Please leave them out.
