Reclassify all tobacco and nicotine containing products as Schedule I drugs.

Created by M.H. on October 29, 2011

In the recent White House response to the various Marijuana related petitions, it was stated that marijuana use is associated with addiction, respiratory disease, and cognitive impairment. This is also true for tobacco products. Additionally, neither the FDA nor the Institute of Medicine have found smoked tobacco to meet the modern standard for safe or effective medicine for any condition.

Given that the current approach to marijuana is deemed appropriate by the government, it follows that cigarettes and other tobacco products which have similar health affects and greater addictive potential be similarly restricted. We ask that tobacco and all nicotine containing products be reclassified as Schedule I controlled substances and be completely banned.
