The 13 Americans killed and 32 wounded by Major Nidal Hasan at Fort Hood on 5 November 2009 was classified as 'workplace violence' despite Major Hasan's Islmaic fundamentalist comments, writings, and connection with Anwar Al-Awlaki (a known terrorist who was later targeted and killed in a U.S. drone strike). Major Hasan recently released several pages of handwritten and typed documents which clearly illustrate that his actions that day were performed as a "Soldier of Allah," who identifies with Al Qaeda's and other Islamic extremist ideology.
Classifying this horrific act by Major Hasan as an act of terrorism will allows the our nation and the military to properly recognize those wounded and the families of those killed with the benefits they deserve.
