Reclassifying marijuana (cannabis) from Schedule I to Schedule III of the Controlled Substances Act would allow doctors in Medical Marijuana states to prescribe marijuana for qualifying patients without violating federal law. It would also allow easier access to marijuana (cannabis) for researchers, scientists and research institutions wishing to study the medical effects of marijuana. Possible cures for many diseases may be locked in the marijuana (cannabis) plant, just waiting to be discovered.
Research in the U.S. and other countries has already indicated some possible medical uses for marijuana (cannabis), but research in the U.S. is limited due to Schedule I restrictions.
