The United States claims to be an equal nation, but the judicial system in place proves otherwise. Prosecutors pushing plea-bargains imprison people without a just trial and are causing American prisons to fill to capacity with inmates whom under less intimidating circumstances may not have been placed there. Racial discrimination thrives in the courts as minorities continue to be unfairly prosecuted, and gender bias flourishes as men and women receive sentences that are distinctly unequal. Equal crimes deserve equal sentences, no matter race, gender, or creed. Prosecutors need to be made less powerful and juries more open-minded. Until this issue is addressed, U.S. citizens will not be truly free.
