Bayard Rustin was an openly gay civil rights leader who worked in labor, as well as peace and justice efforts for his entire life. In 1956, Rustin trained Martin Luther King Jr in non-violent protest, which included convincing King to abandon armed protection, such as a personal handgun. While playing a role in developing King's campaign, he was forced to keep it secret due to his orientation, which he did not keep secret.
Bayard Rustin organized the March on Washington in 1963, but was not allowed to receive credit for it despite King's support. After that, he continued to work in peace and civil rights, including gay rights until his death in 1987.
The 50th anniversary of the March on Washington is this year. Isn't it time to give this man credit for his role in this country's history?
