Because of social and economic reasons, music and visual arts seem to be dwindling in our schools. Meanwhile, education "reform" is being forced down by people with no education experience.
If you look at any study, from anywhere in the world, you find what all teachers have known for a very long time: Guided involvement in the arts makes students a better overall student. If you look at any study concerning a correlation between test scores, wellness, and arts involvement, you find that the more a student is engaged in arts programs (and building their artistic abilities), the more those test scores, and mental wellness increases! Even in college, you will find that the hardest working students in any classroom and the most successful students ARE THE ARTS STUDENTS!
