Recognize and reward Stephen Sondheim, our foremost living composer, lyricist, and dramturg, as America's Poet Laureate.

Created by S.H. on April 21, 2015

Stephen Sondheim, mentored as a young man by none other than one of the founding fathers of American Musical Theater, Oscar Hammerstein II, remains at the vanguard of the art. Besides winning a Pulitzer Prize for his groundbreaking collaboration with James Lapine for "Sunday In The Park With George", he has carried the torch of American Musical Theater through decades where the lights seemed very dimmed indeed, mentoring and sheltering fresh, new voices all while still collaborating with nearly peerless talents on (figures taken from Wikipedia, at a hurry) nineteen major musical works and literally countless minor and incidental works. His genius is truly nonpareil and worthy of this and all recognition of the highest orders.
