The facilities of USMMA (Kings Point) are so outdated and decaying that they have begun to be a danger to the school's own students, highlighted by the hospitalization of several Midshipmen in early 2012 when an aging water heater spread Carbon Monoxide throughout the Academy barracks. It's dock was also deemed unsafe and closed last year.
USMMA produces officers for the US Merchant Marine, as well as every US uniformed service, including the Coast Guard and NOAA; but seems to have been forgotten by the government that established it 70 years ago.
An institution which serves our defense AND economic interests deserves far more support and funding from the Federal Government than it does today.
