recognize Antoinette Tuff for her bravery in disarming a gunman at an elementary school using only her words.

Created by C.G. on August 21, 2013

On August 20, Ms. Tuff was working at the Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy in GA when a gunman stormed into the school. He held her captive, sporadically firing his gun in her direction. Ms. Tuff remained calm and talked to the gunman, calmed him down and eventually got him to put down his gun without harming anyone.

She later said “He said that he didn’t have any reason to live and that he knew he was going to die today…I knew that if he got out that door he was gonna kill everybody.”
